Artist’s Statement
My work is about flow: the interconnectedness and dynamism of nature and our part within it, as well as the concept of time as a living thing – the past turning into the present and the future. I find inspiration in liminal zones, natural dynamic systems, and the interaction of the human mind with the senses in acts of perception: places, events, and experiences in ceaseless process of becoming.
My current project, Conchology, emerged while I was thinking about the concept of “home” and experiencing intense longing for my own place of origin near the ocean. I’ve lived many places and love the idea that shells exhibit their own life journeys in their growth patterns. My abstract shell designs reference the use of shell jewellery since the earliest known human culture: the origins of jewellery making itself. Reflections on human fragility and resilience, these pieces are metaphors for human journeys.
Bio
Carolyn Young (she/her) is a multidisciplinary Canadian art jeweller and artist whose work has been exhibited in juried and curated national and international exhibitions. Known for her innovative exploration and use of alternative materials, Young was awarded a national residency at the Canadian Craft Biennial at the Art Gallery of Burlington in 2017. Her work is in private collections in Canada, the US, Europe, and the Middle East. She holds graduate degrees in Art History from the University of Toronto. Young’s studio is on the traditional territory of the Attawandaron (Neutral), Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples on land that is part of the Haldimand Tract granted to the Six Nations in 1784 that includes 10 kilometres on each side of the full length of the Grand River in southwestern Ontario.
